Sri Lanka, which was originally known as Ceylon, a name probably familiar to aficionados of tea, is an island in the Indian Ocean. When looking at potential destinations in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka holidays could easily be thought of as being similar to Maldives holidays, but while the climates and beauty are comparable, there is so much more variety on offer in Sri Lanka.
The food and culture is extremely similar to that of India. However it boasts a wide variation in flavours and styles, having been influenced by the many cultures that have used the island as a stopping off point on busy trade routes.
Sri Lankans, like their neighbours across the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar, are cricket mad. The most prolific religion in Sri Lanka is Buddhism, and this couldn’t be clearer when you come across the massive amount of religious structures around the country. There are of course cultural bearings that you can witness as well, including rituals as well as festivals.
